1.1Representation

Gender

The Walking Dead:
This show has several women in it but there are mostly men. The women don't talk to each other that often but when they do its either about life before the 'walkers' or what they will do to help out the camp. The show represents women not to be very brave or heroic. This is shown by them not saving many life's when people are in danger so they leave the men to do that. This passes the test.

Friends:
This show has three female and three male characters in it. They are all best friends in the show and the women talk to each other about men but they also talk about other topics. The women in the show are represented as strong independent women because they live alone and they are not in a relationship with a man most of the time which shows they can cope without men in their life. This show passes the test.

Oceans 11:
This show has only one female character called Tess. She is engaged to Terry but her ex husband is Danny Ocean. She only talks to the men in this film and its usually about her relationship with them. Tess is represented as a weak woman as she relies on men for everything throughout the film. This film does not pass the test.

Age

The Walking Dead:
There is a mixture of ages in this show. The youngest main characters are 10-12 years old where as the oldest is between the ages of 60 to 70 years. The young characters are presented to be scared and not very practical when it comes to life or death situations. The older characters are  a lot more wise in the show and they think about other people more than themselves.

Friends:
The main characters are all the similar age in this show. In the first season they are between the ages of 22 to 25 but in the last season they are 32 to 35. At the start of the series they are represented as young adults that just want to have fun and don't really think much about their futures. However, nearer to the end of the show, they are all a lot more mature as some of them have children or/get married. This shows that getting older has made them think about their futures more and wan to settle down with families.

Oceans 11:
They do not say how old the characters are in this film but it is clear that there is a variety of different ages among thew characters. The younger characters in this film are represented as immature men as they mess about a lot. They are also shown nervous during the heist which implies they don't have much experience in crime.

Sexuality

The Walking Dead:
All of the characters in the show are heterosexual. There are a number of couples in the show but a lot of them break up or one of them dies. The show shows the bond between the couples of what they would do for each other to keep them alive and safe.

Friends:
We know that all the main characters are heterosexual in the show because they all date people the opposite sex to them. These characters go through a lot of relationships in the series as there are so my episodes. This means that us viewers learn to understand what the characters are going through well and how they are in relationships.

Oceans 11:
This film doesn't mention anyone's sexuality. However there is one couple in the film which is a male and female. The main character Danny is clearly heterosexual as he used to be married to Tess and he gets back with her at the end of the film. The film focuses around the relationship between Danny and Tess.

2.1 Addition

2:
At the Oscars in 2013, a lot of concerns was raised to how sexist it was with Seth Macfarlane hosting it. During the course of the night, Macfarlane made a lot of sexist jokes. At the beginning of the night, he showed a skit called 'We saw your boobs' which was him naming actresses that exposed their breasts in films. This came across sexist because he makes a joke about women showing their bodies when really they did it in a professional manor for their job. Even though men show their bodies in films as well, Macfarlane aimed the joke at women which needs to change as this is disrespectful to the work these actresses have done. In future, the producers should not allow the host to show skits or make jokes that come across sexist.

3:
The film 'The Apartment' comes across misogynist to women. This is shown by having only one female character that speaks. This shows that it is difficult for women to get a lead role in films back in the 1960's however in this century, there are more opportunities for women to get leads roles in films. In 'The Apartment' one of the main sets is at the office where Baxter, who is the main character, works. It is a very big office in New York but no women are shown to be working in a high department. This would show the audience at home that it is very difficult for women to get a job in a high hierarchy when competing with men. In this century, it is still difficult for women to get a job that is high up in the hierarchy but it has defiantly improved since the 1960's.

  1. You are mainly saying who is in the product not how they are represented?
